History and Uses of Urena Fiber

Urena fiber is a fiber obtained from part of the stem of a plant grown as a substitute for jute during periods of jute fiber shortage during wartime. It belongs to the same plant family as jute, and was first recognized around the year 1926. It grows well in countries in South America, with stems reaching about 10 feet tall. The fiber is separated using the same method used for producing hemp and jute fiber. The natural color of the fiber is almost white, with a soft and glossy texture. Urena fiber is commonly woven into fabric for inexpensive clothing. If woven into thick fabric, it is used for home interior decoration and for making various types of sacks.
